Current Situation in Malaysia

The number of reported HIV infection (including AIDS) in Malaysia still continues to increase since it was first detected in 1986. There were 6,978 cases of reported HIV infection in year 2002 as compared to 5,938 in year 2001. It is about 17% increment compared to the previous year. The increase is mainly contributed by states of Selangor, Johor, Kelantan and Perak, which have reported more cases of HIV infections, and also from cases detected from screening programs in prisons and Pusat Serenti, MTCT and at primary care level (PPHIV)

As the trend of reported HIV infection continues to rise, it is expected that the number of reported AIDS cases will subsequently increase. There were 1,193 AIDS cases reported in 2002, which was reduced by 8.4% from previous year. The annual repeported AIDS cases are also seem to be leveled off during last four years, acondition that strongly reflects the under-reporting of AIDS cases in the country.
