Most AIDS victims (about 92.2%) and those infected with HIV (about 93.9%) are men. Although the number of women infected with HIV is relatively low, the number has shown a consistent rise. The average percentage of HIV infection reported among women increased from 1.4% in the first five years, at the onset of the disease (1986 – 1990), to 3.1% in the five years that followed (1991 – 1995) and 5.2% during the last three years (1996 – 1998). In 2002, the rate of HIV infection among women was 9.03%.
