National PROSTAR Jamboree 2001 at Balok Beach , Kuantan, 28 – 31 May 2001

OBJECTIVES

  • To educate PROSTAR members on the dangers of HIV/AIDS.

  • To increase the knowledge of youths on HIV/AIDS infection, its spread and prevention.

  • To develop youths who can be role models to others in the fight against AIDS.

  • To produce PROSTAR members who care about nature and the environment, independent and compassionate towards those who suffer from AIDS.

  • To produce PROSTAR members who possess a high degree of endurance, integrity, maturity, and highly motivated in facing obstacles and challenges in whatever form, in the effort to prevent HIV/AIDS.

  • To develop youths who are self-sufficient, competitive, and proactive in carrying out activities related to the prevention of HIV/AIDS.

 

DURATION OF PROJECT AND PARTICIPANTS

This jamboree was held from the 28 th to 31 st May 2001 at MPK Balok Beach , Kuantan, Pahang. Participants consisted of PROSTAR school members from all over the country. Each state was asked to send not more than 30 PROSTAR school members.

  • JAMBOREE ACTIVITIES

Among the activities that were held during the Jamboree include:

•  PROSTAR Camp

Participants, estimated at 600 PROSTAR members, camped throughout the duration of this programme. The camping site was located in Balok Beach Recreational Area.

•  Official Launching

The official launching of the programme took place on the second day, 29 th May 2001 , at 9.00 am . It was officiated by the Secretary General of Health, Y. Bhg. Dato' Chua Jui Meng, Ministry of Health , Malaysia .

•  PROSTAR Bakti ( Gotong royong )

Through PROSTAR Bakti, participants were exposed to activities to inculcate a love for nature and its inhabitants. Participants were divided into four groups. Exercising the spirit of gotong royong , the first group were given the task of clearing the surrounding areas and houses of the villagers in the Balok area. The second group took charge of cleaning the cemetery, whereas the third group worked the surrounding area of the mosque. The fourth group, which was a small group, visited the homes of AIDS victims.

•  Youth Motivational Talk

A motivational talk to educate participants on AIDS disease based on the experience of an AIDS victim.

•  Tazkirah after the Morning Prayers

A tazkirah was held after the morning prayers to discuss issues and problems related HIV/AIDS.

•  PROSTAR Variety Games

Games were held to develop the spirit of solidarity among the participants. Groups, each given a name associated with HIV/AIDS, consisted of participants from different states to encourage integration amongst PROSTAR members.

•  PROSTAR Poetry Night

PROSTAR Poetry Night was held with the aim of creating awareness on problems and issues related to HIV/AIDS, as well to inculcate a sense of patriotism among the participants.

•  Aerobics

An e xercise event for the physical well being of participants.

•  P ROSTAR Noble Service

To create awareness and a sense of responsibility towards the preservation of nature and the environment.

7.0      CONCLUSION

It is the hoped that such activities would encourage the youths of this country to join PROSTAR as members, in promoting awareness and educating the public on HIV/AIDS and its prevention.
